Leather Care
We use English Finished Bridle Leather in most everything we make. This is a premium leather from heavy native US steers that comes with a drum dyed finish with tallow and oils worked into the hide.
Our halters go through a second mineral oil dipping after they leave our halter makers. This serves a two fold purpose - to add our Quillin rich medium brown color to our halters, including the edges, and add extra protection to the elements. During warmer weather the halters can wick out a little oil during the shipping process - just hang them in the shed row or tack room for a few hours then wipe off any excess oil. Oil from new halters will stain so please be careful to hang the halters up.
How to care for and keep your Quillin Leather Goods looking like new.
We really like Lexol, saddle soap or Lexol Cleaner. Non oily and easy to use.
Clean off any dirt or mud and allow the tack to thoroughly dry out.
Inspect for worn parts and make sure the stitching is intact. We have a complete repair shop at our downtown location and can meet most any repair needs.
Lastly, use saddle soap or a water based cleaner to clean, soften and help preserve your leather good. Really dried out tack may require an oil such as neatsfoot to bring it back to life.
Our belts, dog collars, note pads and other of our personal and pet items can be rejuvenated with saddle soap.
